Salerno is a beautiful city near the Amalfi coast which became famous all over the world thanks to its Salernitana Medical School (the first University of Medicine in the world, dating back to the 9th century AD).
In more recent times the city has hosted the King of Italy, who moved from Rome in 1943 after Italy negotiated peace with the Allies during the Second World War. Some Allied landings during Operation Avalanche (The second landing in Italy) occurred in the province of Salerno.
Today Salerno is an important cultural centre in Campania and in Italy, with a rich and varied culture. It is divided into three distinct regions: the medieval sector, the 19th century district and the most densely populated post-war area, whichhas many apartment buildings.
